A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING LONNIE MOORE, SR., OF JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI, UPON HIS RECEIPT OF THE BLUE CROSS & BLUE SHIELD AGELESS HEROES AWARD FOR HIS COMMUNITY SERVICE.
WHEREAS, Lonnie Moore, Sr., of Jackson, Mississippi, was among 24 Blue Cross & Blue Shield Mississippi Ageless Heroes honored during ceremonies held on Tuesday, March 2, 1999, hosted by celebrity Art Linkletter; and
WHEREAS, Moore, a former teacher, counsellor and basketball player-coach in the U.S. Navy, applies a positive, "can-do" attitude to retirement; and
WHEREAS, he teaches an aerobics class at the Golden Key Senior Citizens Center in Jackson, mentors middle school students, recruits for Alcorn State University, sings with the Jackson Retired Teachers' Chorus, serves as president of his neighborhood association and leads political discussions at a local coffee club; and
WHEREAS, Blue Cross & Blue Shield donates $9,000.00 to charities in the recipients' honor, recognizing the inspirational accomplishments of these individuals regardless of their ages: A panel of independent judges selected the 24 honorees from 150 nominations from throughout the state for either community involvement, creativity, neighborliness, love of learning, new beginnings or vitality; and
WHEREAS, the American Association of Retired Persons report by the year 2030, one in every five Americans will be 65 or older, and we can learn from the achievements of Mississippi's Ageless Heroes that growing older can mean many positive things and act as community role models for all Mississippi citizens:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Lonnie Moore, Sr., of Jackson, Mississippi, upon being named a Mississippi Ageless Hero for the Central Region by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Moore and be made available to representatives of Blue Cross & Blue Shield and the Capitol Press Corps.
